At 8:10 a.m. April 26, ECVFD (20) and Harmony EMS (62) were alerted for a BART bus that had been struck by a train with 11 injuries. The incident originally was said to be at the Main Street railroad crossing, but it was quickly determined to be at the small Maple Avenue crossing.
Upon hearing of the possible severity of the call, additional EMS units from 76 and 51 were requested by Capt. 20, who was responding in 62-5. Lt. 20, an EMT, arrived first at the scene and began to triage patients. Evans City Police also were quick to the scene. Rescue units from stations 19, 23 and 22 also were alerted to respond and also another EMS unit from station 99.
Three units from 62 soon arrived and began the patient assessment and extrication process. Rescue 20 arrived but fortunately the passenger compartment of the bus had remained nearly intact, so there was no entrapment. More units from all the responding services arrived and assisted with patient extrication.
Two medical helicopter transports were necessary, one by Lifeflight and one by Stat MedEvac. Both landed at a landing zone set up behind the Evans City Elementary School.
Multiple police units from neighboring areas and state police responded for assistance with investigation, traffic and crowd control. Many media outlets were represented at the scene, with many remaining on scene all day. Representatives of federal agencies also were on scene.
Unfortunately, a 91-year-old female later died at Allegheny General Hospital of injuries sustained in the crash. All 10 other patients were transported to area hospitals with varying degree of injuries.
The ECVFD would like to express condolences to the family of the patient who died and extend good wishes to the patients who survived but are dealing with healing. The ECVFD also would like to thank all of the mutual aid emergency services who came to help us out in our time of need.
UPDATE: A second patient, an 88-year-old male, also died of his injuries about a week after the incident.

The ECVFD recently purchased a 1983 White tanker/pumper from the Meridian Volunteer Fire Company. This will serve as a secondary tanker to provide water for fires in rural areas around Evans City. See the link under Apparatus at left for more information about Tanker 20-2, or any of our other apparatus.

The annual Evans City Light-Up-Night was held on Dec. 8, 2012. Santa arrived via fire engine to light the community Christmas tree on Main Street. Then participants gathered at the fire station for refreshments and a visit with Santa. The Rotary sponsored the event and donations also were gathered for Toys for Tots. Hope to see you there next year!
